The Lower Limb

The lower limb shares many similarities with the upper limb, not only is it connected to the trunk by a girdle, the pelvic girdle consisting of the innominate bones, sacrum and coccyx. The pelvic bones allow the weight of the body to be transmitted to the legs. The   leg is made up of three parts, the upper leg comprising the femur, the lower leg formed by the tibia and fibula and the foot made up of the tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges. The major difference between the upper and lower limbs is the upper limb is free of locomotion and is adapted for manipulation, while the lower limb supports the weight of the body and is the major organ of locomotion. Thorough understanding of the bones of the pelvis and lower limbs is essential.
